An unofficial fan project
YELLO Universe is an independent fan project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by YELLO, Boris Blank, Dieter Meier, Universal Music or YouTube/Google.
Created by Lars Anlauf · inspAIred studio. Artist names and song titles identify the collection. The interface, geometric artwork, the Hyperspace flight and all surrounding visual effects are original project work. The package contains no copied YELLO album covers, video files, audio files or thumbnail files.
Videos, thumbnail images and trademarks remain associated with their respective rights holders. This project does not grant permission to reuse their media.
Where the videos play
Playable entries use YouTube’s embedded player with its normal controls. The Do It entry opens an official Universal video page separately. This app does not download, re-encode or restream videos, and it does not bypass playback restrictions.
Preview images
Thumbnails are on at the start of each page visit. The selected preview loads immediately; other images load when their cards become visible or approach the view. They come directly from i.ytimg.com. These requests send ordinary technical connection data, including your IP address, to YouTube/Google before you start a video.
Open Explore → Thumbnails to turn these images off or on. Off removes the thumbnails and stops further thumbnail loading for this visit. The choice stays only in page memory: reloading begins with thumbnails on again.
These are static images. Hovering over a card does not start a preview video or sound. While an image loads, if it fails, or while thumbnails are disabled, the card shows original geometric artwork. Decorative movement respects Motion Off and the system’s Reduced Motion setting.
Play, travel and disconnect
The page creates a YouTube player and requests its official IFrame API only after you press Play. Choosing a nearby card, using the time slider or selecting a search result travels to that entry without starting its video. A Play action requests playback; your browser may require another click within YouTube.
Switching between Journey and Ambient keeps the current player and its playback position. Travelling to another entry stops the current player and shows the next entry’s preview on arrival. There is no continuous automatic playback. The app requests a pause when its browser tab becomes hidden.
Explore → Disconnect YouTube removes the embedded player and thumbnail images and switches thumbnails off. A later Play action can reconnect the player; the thumbnail switch can independently enable image previews again. Disconnect does not undo earlier network requests, unload code that has already run, or clear Google/YouTube browser storage.
The embed uses youtube-nocookie.com. Once loaded, it connects to YouTube/Google and sends ordinary technical connection data. The app’s thumbnail choice and player connection are separate choices. The website’s hosting provider can also process normal access data independently of this page’s code.
Local choices and visual effects
The journey’s Motion and Sound choices are stored in this browser under yello-universe-v16 (an earlier yello-universe-v15 Motion choice is read once). Whether the long intro already played in this browser session is kept in session storage under yello-v16-intro. Search text, the open navigation panel and the thumbnail switch are kept in page memory. The selected video ID appears in the page address as ?v=…. There is no account or server-side user profile in this app.
The internal Ambient engine can reuse earlier local visual settings under yello-director-v12 and compatible predecessor values. Existing validated stage-score drafts and score-mode choices under yello-stagecraft-drafts-v12 and yello-stagecraft-options-v12 remain compatible. The v16 interface has no Director editor and ordinary browsing does not upload or edit those drafts. Clearing this site’s browser storage removes stored choices and drafts.
Ambient uses original scores, local SVG/CSS artwork and an optional local WebGL shader. Its movement is authored visual direction, not detected music beats or verified film cuts. It can follow YouTube’s public player clock; it never reads video pixels or audio. In Journey, this Ambient renderer is suspended. No camera, microphone or display capture is requested.
The Journey’s Hyperspace effects (time tunnel, particles, light) are drawn locally with WebGL in your browser. They never draw over a playing video and pause in Ambient, in hidden tabs and with Motion Off or Reduced Motion. The optional flight sound is synthesised in your browser with the Web Audio API; it is off by default, loads no audio files and starts only after you switch it on.
Catalogue and credits
This edition keeps the inherited collection of 41 entries: 40 YouTube player candidates and one external Universal video page. It is a selected collection, not a claim to include every YELLO upload. The journey orders entries by the catalogue’s original song-release dates, rather than video-upload dates. Some catalogue dates identify only a year.
Sources and historical data were carried forward for this interface redesign. They were not newly researched for v15, and inclusion in the collection does not establish current playback availability in every region, account or browser.
The locally hosted Barlow Condensed font is distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The full licence is included in assets/FONT-LICENSE.txt. The page requests no external font service.

Hosting and server logs
The site is delivered by Netlify, Inc. (USA) as a static package. To deliver pages, the hosting provider processes technical access data such as IP address, time, requested file, referrer and browser type in server logs (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, legitimate interest in a secure, working website). Transfers to the USA rely on the safeguards in Netlify’s data processing agreement. This page itself contains no analytics, advertising, tracking pixels or cookies of its own.
YouTube previews and player
Static preview images are loaded from YouTube (Google Ireland Ltd. / Google LLC) when the journey opens; the player and its API load only after you press Play. Both transmit your IP address and technical connection data to Google. You can switch previews off at any time via Explore → Thumbnails, or remove player and previews with Disconnect YouTube. Google’s privacy policy applies: policies.google.com/privacy.
Settings stored in your browser
Motion and sound choices are kept in your browser’s local storage only so that the page remembers what you selected (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). They never leave your device.
